They aren’t fonts, and that matters
Instagram has no font picker for bios. These styles work because each letter is swapped for a different character that looks like a styled letter. Mostly they come from a Unicode block built for maths, where a bold 𝗛 means something different from a plain H.
People see styling. Software sees unfamiliar symbols. Pick a style and hear what a screen reader might announce for the word “Hi”:
𝗛𝗶
Announced as roughly:
“mathematical sans-serif bold capital H, mathematical sans-serif bold small i”
Exact wording varies by screen reader (VoiceOver, TalkBack, NVDA). Some skip the characters entirely.
So: style one or two words for emphasis, keep your name, what you do and your contact details in plain text, and don’t expect styled words to show up in search. The bio generator writes the plain-text part.
Questions people ask
How do Instagram fonts work if Instagram has no font menu?
They aren’t fonts. They’re Unicode characters that happen to look like styled letters, mostly from the “Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols” block meant for maths notation. Because they’re text, you can paste them into your bio, name, captions and comments.
Why do some letters show as boxes?
Older phones or apps may not have a glyph for every symbol. Bold and italic sans are the most widely supported; bubble and gothic styles are the most likely to show gaps.
Are fancy fonts bad for accessibility?
They can be. Screen readers may read each character by its Unicode name, or skip it, so a styled name can become unreadable to blind users. Use styles for a word or two of emphasis, never for your whole bio or key information.
Do styled letters show up in Instagram search?
Generally no. Search matches ordinary letters, so “𝗯𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘆” won’t match “bakery”. Keep the words you want to be found for in plain text.
